Mr. Sam Perry “Billy” Taylor, age 89, of the Union Hill community of Morgan County, passed away at his residence on Saturday, October 14, 2023. Billy was born July 5, 1934, in Etowah County, son of Edward Denton Taylor and Hattie Lois Higginbotham Taylor. His wife, Wynell Sarah Christian Taylor passed away October 13, 2006. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of New Canaan Baptist Church. Billy was a military veteran, serving both in the US Air Force and US Army (1952 – 1978). He was deployed during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. Billy reached the rank of Sergeant First Class and eventually retired from the Army. Afterward he became a fire fighter with Redstone Fire Department, where he was selected and served as Fire Chief and from which he also retired.
Billy spent leisure time enjoying his family. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were his pride and joy. He also likes to camp and work on cars. Left behind to cherish their precious memories of Billy include: son and daughter-in-law, Gregory Don and Karen Taylor; daughter, Pamela Coyner; grandchildren, Lexus Ratliff (Jordan), Deidra Winkles (Brian) and Andrew Coyner (Stephanie); great grandchildren, Caitlin Winkles, Jaxton Ratliff, Hattie Ratliff and Emma Ratliff; and special friend, Tempie Greenhaw.
Preceding Billy in death include; wife, Wynell Sarah Christian Taylor; parents, Edward and Hattie Taylor, granddaughter, Samantha Coyner; two brothers and three sisters.
A visitation for family and friends will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at Brindlee Mountain Chapel in Morgan City. Funeral services to commemorate Billy’s life will be on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at 2:00 pm also at Brindlee Mountain Chapel in Morgan City. Officiating will be Brother Eldridge Criscoe. Interment will be in New Canaan Cemetery, Somerville, Alabama. Pallbearers will be Jordan Ratliff, David Coyner, Brian Winkles, and Steven Linthicum. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Brindlee Mountain Fire Department.
In honor of Billy’s memory and in lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Brindlee Mountain Fire Department or to Amedisys Hospice of Decatur.
