Ruth Varner Simmons Ruth Varner Simmons was born October 12, 1929 in Chattanooga, TN. A music major (violin) at UT, she was the daughter of Maize and Alvin Varner.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jack Simmons, her two sons Terry Huggins and Kim Huggins and her sister Barbara Mixon.

She is survived by her daughter Suzanne Keel-Eckmann (Tom Eckmann), daughters-in-law Christina Huggins and Jean Huggins, and stepsons Bryan (Darlene) Simmons and Brett (Ann) Simmons. Her 14 grandchildren include Christopher Keel, Erica Huggins, Jane Huggins, Rachel Huggins, Olivia Andre, Amy Simmons, Anna Simmons, Austin Simmons, Taylor Simmons, Colton Simons, Jason Karam, Ashley Padgett, Jonathan Padgett and Amanda Eagan. Her 9 great-granchildren include Destiny and Noah Eagan, Alexis and Cole Andre, Bren Keel, Torin Cantrell, Aidan Simmons, Edith Karam, and Cody Harbin.

Ruth came to a peaceful stop on July 27, 2019 in Huntsville after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Her dear daughter-in-law Darlene Simmons was at her side.

Visitation will be at the Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home on Thursday, August 1, 2019 from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm followed by graveside services at Gatlin Cemetery, Ardmore, Alabama at 2:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Association.
