Rosie Nell Umphrey departed this life on Tuesday, April 18, 2016, at the age of 78 years, 2 months, and 9 days. She was born in the Piney Grove community of Hardin County, Tennessee on February 9, 1938, the daughter of the late Charley Ross and Beedie Marie Baskins Dickey. On March 17, 1951, she was united in marriage to James “Jake” Umphrey, who preceded her in death on April 23, 2003.
Rosie was a member of New Harmony Church. She had worked at Angelica Manufacturing, The Button Factory, and Brown Shoe Company, but her main job was homemaker, being a farmers wife, and baby-sitting. Rosie has been “Mamaw” to many over the years, baby-sitting over one hundred children in her lifetime and she loved each and every one. She enjoyed researching family history, writing stories about her life, working on her scrapbooks, sewing, making quilts, but she loved her babies most of all.
She is survived by her children, Coley Umphrey and his wife, Mildred, Gloria Cole and her husband, Roger, Jeff Umphrey, and Jennifer Fielder and her husband, Jeremy all of Savannah, Tennessee; grandchildren, Scotty Peeler, Cathy Frank, Misti Bradford, Miranda Hunt, Jake Umphrey, Morgan Brown, Jeffrey Umphrey, Jamie Fielder, Jason Fielder, and Jacey Fielder; great grandchildren, Hayleigh Pigg, Cedric Pigg, Jocelyn Stricklin, Tyler Stricklin, Jake Umphrey, Annie Hunt, Emma Umphrey, Kalista Pendley, and Ryan Brown; sisters, Dorothy Davis and Geneva Sheets both of Adamsville, Tennessee.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, James Neal Umphrey; her daughter, Nancy Gail Umphrey; granddaughter, Carol Aday; sister, Verda Umphrey, Juanita Dickey, Myrtle Williams, Lady Ruth Harville, and Marie Hunt; brothers, Daulton Dickey, Wareka Dickey, Vernon Dickey, C.W. Dickey, Albert Dickey, Larry Dickey, and William Edgar Dickey.
