“From Decatur Utilities, Decatur Alabama Due to extreme cold being experienced across the Tennessee Valley, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is asking customers of Decatur Utilities – and its other distributors – to VOLUNTARILY reduce their electrical usage until further notice.
Voluntary measures include:
Lowering thermostats by just one or two degrees makes a big difference in the demand for electricity needed for heating homes and businesses. Use layered clothing, blankets and other measures to increase comfort. Ceiling fans should be set to CLOCKWISE rotation to keep warm air circulating.
Delay using washing machines, dryers, dishwashers and high-energy-use appliances until later on Saturday afternoon.
Keep window covering closed on the non-sunny side of homes but open them if bright sunlight is available to provide additional heat.
“This is a precautionary measure,” said Ray Hardin, general manager for DU. “Anytime we experience a period of extreme cold like this, it significantly increases the demand for electricity. TVA is being proactive by asking for these voluntary reductions in preparation to meet that demand.”
Power demand surpassed 30,000 MegaWatts Friday morning and is expected to remain at that level or higher through the weekend until temperatures moderate.
TVA stated that all generation units are online and additional power has been purchased from outside sources to help meet demand. No operational issues are expected but TVA will continue to closely monitor the situation.”
“[HARTSELLE]Emergency Notification from Hartselle Utilities
Hartselle Utilities under the mandatory direction of TVA will begin a forced reduction of electricity usage. Hartselle Utilities as a distributor of TVA must reduce their usage by 5%.
This can begin within the hour.
TVA is having difficulties suppling the current electricity demand throughout the valley.
This will result in rolling blackouts throughout the City of Hartselle. Not all areas or households will be affected by the rolling blackouts. The blackouts will be up to 30 minutes and could take place at one- and one-half hour intervals.
Hartselle Utilities does not have an option in conducting the blackouts.
If the reduction needed is not accomplished TVA will take over the blackouts over the entire City of Hartselle and HU will have no control over the situation.
Please be patient and know TVA and HU are doing all possible to remedy this situation.
Also, you are asked to conserve electricity usage as much as possible, Clothes dryers and other appliances that consume large amounts of electricity should be limited at this time.
Updates will follow.”
“In an effort to conserve electricity, Florence Utilities and TVA are asking the public to join us in taking some simple steps to reduce power use without impacting the holidays.
Public safety is our overriding priority, so do not significantly turn down your heat, but lowering thermostats by just one or two degrees makes a big difference.
Delay using washing machines, dryers, dishwashers and high-energy-use appliances until later on Saturday afternoon.
Keep window coverings closed on the non-sunny side of homes but open them if bright sunlight is available to provide additional heat.”
