June 7, 1958 – Jan 28, 2017 Roland Davis “Dave” Atkins passed away Saturday at a local hospital. Dave attended Sheffield High and Austin High School in Decatur where he was an outstanding athlete, being selected to the All-American Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976. He was a stand-out baseball player at the University of Alabama. He served on the custodial staff for the last several years at Holmes Street United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Roland Atkins Sr. Survivors include his mother, Judith Webb, of Huntsville; son, Derek Atkins of Thibodaux, LA; two daughters, Danielle Bernard and Devin Atkins both of Thibodaux, LA, sister, Susan Atkins of Huntsville; and one grandson, Lucas Bernard, of Thibodaux, LA. Arrangements have been entrusted to Spry Funeral Home, of Huntsville. The family will receive friends from 12:00pm to 1:00pm on Monday at Holmes Street United Methodist Church, with a memorial service to follow in the Great Room with Rev. Todd Owen, Rev. Eddie Johnson, and Rev. Mack Buttram officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The Pastor’s Discretionary Fund at Holmes Street United Methodist Church.
