Coach Dye graduated from the University of Georgia earning All-American, Academic All-American and Academic All-SEC honors. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at the University of Alabama under Coach Paul Bryant before moving to East Carolina in 1974 as Head Football Coach. He led East Carolina to its first bowl game in 13 years. In 1980 he led the University of Wyoming to its first winning season in eight years.
He became the Head Coach at Auburn in 1981 and immediately changed the culture of Auburn football forever. At Auburn, he led the Tigers to their first SEC championship in 26 years.
He led Auburn to nine straight bowl games and its first victory over Alabama in nine years. Coach Dye was National Coach of the Year in 1983. He was inducted in the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Georgia Football Hall of Fame in 1987.
At Auburn Coach Dye produced 21 All-American players, 71 All SEC players, 85 NFL players, and one Heisman Trophy Winner. His overall coaching career record is 153-62-5.
He currently serves as assistant to the President at Auburn University and spends most of his time on his farm in Notasulga, Alabama.
