Roberta Mary (Mumma) Hamlington

Roberta Mary (Mumma) Hamlington, affectionately known as “Robyn” to family and friends, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 17th at the age of 87. She was born in Dayton, Ohio to the late Robert Edward Mumma and Katharine Ellen (Myers) Mumma. She was raised in Dayton, attended Fairview High School, and was an active member of Fairview Church. After a brief marriage and the untimely death of her first husband Donald Broadstreet, a Navy Pilot, she married the late James “Jim” Hamlington Jr., her husband of 40 years.

Following a number of years in the Air Force, Jim and Robyn settled in Nashville, TN with their three children. She completed her college education in 1981 at Belmont College in Nashville with a B.S degree in Mathematics, and then went on to teach Mathematics at Whites Creek High School for a number of years. In her determination to stay active, she traveled around the world, gardened, and ran. She was an active member of St. Phillips Episcopal Church, sewed, played bridge and supported her children in their numerous endeavors.

Shortly after her husband Jim’s passing in 1996, she moved to Fairfield Glade in Crossville Tennessee. While in Crossville she married the late Robert Thiele. She picked up the game of golf, traveled the country in an RV and visited with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Robyn is survived by children Gary Hamlington (Jeanette), Jim Hamlington (Karen), and Lynda Spinolo (Charles), and companion of 9 years Cork Phillips. She was also a loving grandmother and great grandmother to seven grandchildren: Peter Hamlington (Barbara), Benjamin Hamlington (Mylinh), Katharine Smith (Brad), Jeremy Hamlington (Megan), Luke Spinolo (Gael), Joanna Spinolo, Julia Hoath (Aris); and five great grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sisters, Joanna Shelton and Ellen Kay Kneisley.

Robyn, Mom, Grandma will be remembered by her family and friends for her love of life, love of family and her deep faith in Jesus Christ.

The family extends thanks to American House Memory Care, with special gratitude to caregivers Wanda Marshall, Sarah Butler, and Leara Powell.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2022, 2:00 p.m. at St. Phillips Episcopal Church, 85 Fairway Dr., Nashville, TN 37214. A gathering of family and friendsdementiasociety.charityproud.org/donate will follow in Michaud Hall at St. Phillips.
