Roberta Ann Powers Carson (90) of Huntsville, Alabama passed away on April 25, 2023. Roberta was born on September 18, 1932, to Lloyd and Hallie in Danville, Virginia. After graduating from George Washington High School in 1950, she married her high school sweetheart, Hugh C. Carson in January 1951. Roberta and Hugh migrated life together through his Naval service, college at North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC), and subsequent jobs in Charlotte, NC and ultimately Huntsville, AL.

Roberta was a member of Lakewood Garden Club in the early years in Huntsville. Roberta remained stay-at-home mother to four children until October 1969 when she began working at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) as a secretary. Subsequently becoming the first employee of the newly-formed College of Nursing (1970) as the secretary to the Dean. Through her 29-year career, Roberta assisted the Dean office and faculty staff with pinning ceremonies, graduations, budget formulations, and construction of the Nursing building in 1976 to include the building dedication by George Wallace, Governor of Alabama.

Upon her retirement in February 1992, Roberta delighted in her family to include babysitting grandchildren, traveling to Hawaii, Panama Canal, and Alaska. Roberta and Hugh participated in square dancing and bowling as a couple. Several times throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Roberta organized family reunions to several vacation and resort destinations.

Roberta is precedented in death by her husband of 63 years, Hugh C. Carson; her son, Timothy H. Carson; her brother, Lloyd Powers of Danville, VA; her parents, Lloyd and Hallie Powers of Danville, VA; her step-grandmother Bessie Williams Powers of Danville, VA; her maternal grandparents, Walter I. and Blanche Atkins of Clarksville, VA; and her paternal grandparents, John and Mary Powers of Danville, VA.

Roberta is survived by her son, Jeff Carson (Gayle) of Enterprise, AL; two daughters, Daphne Minshew (Mark) of Fayetteville, TN and Becky Caneer (Art) of Huntsville, AL; daughter-in-law, Sarah A. Carson of Huntsville, AL; seven grandchildren, Shannon (Jeremy) Brown of Jacksonville, AL, Stephanie (Matt) Owens of Enterprise, AL, Bethany Minshew of Huntsville, AL, Matthew Minshew of Fayetteville, TN, Daniel Caneer (Brooke) of Simpsonville, SC, Hallie Taylor (James) of Huntsville, AL, and Caroline McCormick (Jamie) of Birmingham, AL; seven great-grandchildren, Carson Stone, Caleb Shuffitt, Taylor Owens, Kaylie Owens, Eli Caneer, Abigail Taylor, and Shepard Caneer; many nieces and nephews; her sister, Mary Frances Jones of Danville, VA; and her half-brothers, Tommy Powers (Linda) of Danville, VA, George Powers (Marilee) of Stevensville, MD, and Mark Powers (Tracey) of Danville, VA.

Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2023, at First Baptist Church Chapel. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Mark Seanor and Rev. Allan Greer officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
