Robert Eugene Douthit, age 78 of Sheffield, died Thursday, August 9, 2012. His family will receive friends Saturday 6-8 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home of Tuscumbia. The funeral service will be Sunday, 2:00 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Sheffield with Rev. Steve Pochop officiating. His body will be placed in the church sanctuary at 1 p.m. to lie in state. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Sheffield.
Until his illness, Robert was a very active member of First Baptist Church, Sheffield. He served the church as Deacon Emeritus, but his passion was ministering to young boys in the Royal Ambassador’s program. He was a retired homebuilder, member of the Kiwanis, Phi Sigma Kappa and the Homebuilders Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Marguriette Douthit; brothers, James Douthit, Jerry Douthit and Charles “Duck” Douthit; sister, Mary Ann McElroy.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Ladner Douthit of Sheffield; son, Robert Daniel Douthit and wife Kim; daughters, Donna Lynn Douthit Wilson and husband Harry, Mary Deanna Douthit Thomas and husband David; brother, Jackie Edward Douthit and wife Rose of South Carolina; grandchildren, Todd Wilson, Ashlee Sisk (Chris), Elizabeth Wilson, Cody Thomas, Jake Thomas, Hannah Thomas and Tre’ Srygley; great grandchildren, Clair Lansford and Callie Srygley; and special caregiver, Lulu.
Pallbearers are Steve Ladner, Mark Ladner, Charlie Douthit, Gregg Shelton, John David McElroy and Corey Denis.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Sheffield, Royal Ambassadors Program.
