Mr. Robert Donald Word Jr., 89, of Scottsboro, AL, passed away surrounded by loved ones on Friday, September 22, 2023, at 8:32 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert Donald Word Sr. and Virginia Kennamer Word. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Elizabeth Payne Word, son, Don Word (Tranny) daughter, Emily Word Moody (Jack). His memory lives on through his beloved grandchildren: Howie Haberstroh (Kathleen), Rice Moody (Mary), Ben Word (Ciara), Elizabeth Moody Shelton (David) as well as his great-grandchildren: Ella, Emily, and Lillian.
Born on February 3rd, 1934, in Scottsboro, AL, Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. A 1955 Auburn University graduate, he served as President of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and served as president of the National Auburn Alumni Association from 1985 to 1987. He also proudly served on the University of South Alabama Foundation Board for 25 years. He was a Korean War Veteran, where he served as First Lieutenant in a field artillery unit with the U.S. Army. He had a profound impact on the Scottsboro community as a real estate developer, businessman, and dedicated member of the Lions Club for over 60 years. Bob also found great pleasure in entertaining friends, waterfowl hunting, and Auburn football. He was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church all of his life. He leaves behind a legacy rooted in his devotion to Christ, family, and community, a legacy that will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation will be on Monday, September 25, 2023, from 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM with the Funeral Service to follow at First United Methodist Church in Scottsboro, Alabama.
Interment will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Scottsboro, Alabama.
