Robert (“Bob”) Wakefield, Jr.

Robert (“Bob”) Wakefield, Jr., of Florence, went to be with the Lord on September 19, 2024. He was at home and surrounded by friends and family.

Visitation will be Sunday, September 22, 2024 from 2-3 p.m. at Greenview Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Officiating will be Dr. John Brock. Burial will follow in Greenview Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Edwards, Don Threet, David Browder, Jackson Wakefield, and Hank Carter. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of Bob’s Sunday school class.

Bob was an only child born in Birmingham, Alabama on March 5, 1936. After graduating from West End High School, he enrolled at the University of Alabama and received a bachelor’s degree in accounting.  Bob retired from the State of Alabama in 1998 after serving in the business offices of Troy State University and University of North Alabama (formerly Florence State University).

Bob moved to Florence, Alabama in 1972 and lived there until his death. Bob was a member of Highland Baptist Church, served on the Finance Committee and as a Deacon. Bob eluded I Timothy 3 which states overseers and deacons should be above reproach, faithful to wife, self-controlled, temperate, hospitable, respectable, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not a lover of money, not quarrelsome.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Margaret Rosamond Wakefield, parents Walter and Nell Wakefield, Aunt Geraldine Ivey and daughter-in-law Martha Mixson Wakefield.  Survivors include daughter Phyllis Browder (son-in-law David Browder), son Steve Wakefield, grandchildren Jackson Wakefield, Reagan Wakefield, Stephaine Atkinson, Kristin Browder and great grandchildren Kaylin Atkinson, Aubrey Atkinson and William Atkinson.
