Bob Burrell, MoCo DA. Courtesy photo 2002Robert “Bob” Burrell, 60, of Decatur, passed away Friday, March 15, 2013, at Decatur Morgan Hospital. Mr. Burrell was born May 30, 1952, in Rome, Georgia. He was predeceased by his parents, Leon and Louise Burrell. Mr. Burrell received his undergraduate degree at the University of Georgiaand obtained his law degree at Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. He served as Morgan County District Attorney for 24 years from 1987 to 2011, and for eight years prior to that he served as an Assistant District Attorney. He was Of Counsel with the law firm of Harris, Caddell and Shanks, P.C. He was the Founder and past President of the Morgan County Child Advocacy Center. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. He was a member of The Alabama, Georgia, and American Bar Associations. He was also a member of The United States Supreme Court Bar. He received the Golden Gloves Award for the highest DUI conviction rate in Alabama awarded by the Alabama Chapter of Mother’s Against Drunk Drivers and the Alabama Attorney General’s Office. He was named Law Enforcement Officer of the Year by the Decatur Exchange Club. He founded and was past President of The Young Lawyer’s Section of the Morgan County Bar Association. He was also past President of the Decatur Jaycees, The American Heart Association, The Boys and Girls Club of Morgan County, and Frances Nungester PTA. He was an active member of the Rotary Club of Decatur, Morgan County, and State Republican Executive Committees. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of Parents and Children Together, Decatur Chamber of Commerce, Decatur City Council of PTA’s, and the Chestnut Grove PTA.

Mr. Burrell is survived by his wife, Mary Stuart Burrell; children, Jenny B. Mercieca, Ben Burrell, Bill Burrell, and Gaines Rowe; grandchildren, Hannah and Bailey Mercieca; a brother, Jimmy Burrell and wife Luverne. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 19, 2013, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church with a memorial service following at 11 a.m. with The Reverend Evan Garner officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Ken Collier, Steve Cox, Tilden Dillard, Paul Green, Barney Lovelace, Tom McCutcheon, the Lawyers at the law firm of Harris, Caddell and Shanks, and the Men and Women in Law Enforcement. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Decatur Morgan Hospital Foundation or St. John’s Episcopal Church. Berryhill Funeral Home in Huntsville is directing.
