SHEFFIELD-The Ritz Theatre is hosting auditions for its upcoming musical Into the Woods, the 2023 production for the SummerStock at The Ritz program. Auditions will be held March 25, March 26, and April 1 at the theatre. Advanced registration is required for auditions by calling 256-383-0533 or emailing tvaa@tennesseevalleyarts.org.
SummerStock is The Ritz’s annual summer musical, which features a cast of young adults who spend the summer training and rehearsing. This year’s production is being directed by Suzanne Reese-Mills, with music direction by Drew Mills.
“Into the Woods is not only an audience favorite,” says Reese-Mills, “but also a dream for many musical theatre performers. Stephen Sondheim’s brilliant writing offers a clever and compelling take on the Grimm’s fairy tale characters.”
Private auditions will be held every 15 min. Auditioners will be expected to do the following:
- Arrive at The Ritz 30 minutes before their designated time to complete paperwork.
- Be prepared to disclose all scheduling conflicts for rehearsal process and show run (May-July).
- Bring a headshot and resume.
- Have a prepared one-minute monologue AND a song in the style of Into the Woods that showcase their vocal and acting ranges. CD and smart phone connections will be available, or they may bring their own accompanist.
Principal roles are for 7-8 men and 10-11 women with a mixed adult ensemble. Adults ages 16-26 are given preference for SummerStock casting. Performance dates are July 21-23 and 28-29.
“Each year, SummerStock at The Ritz aims to offer semi-professional performance experience to exceptionally talented young local artists,” says Reese-Mills. “The Shoals area is overflowing with people who fit that bill, and Into the Woods is sure to deliver a uniquely enriching experience to this year’s cast.”
SummerStock is made possible by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. The Ritz Theatre season is presented by Tennessee Valley Art Association’s Education Outreach Partners.
