Tanner Rhodes and April Simone – scene from Opal – Ritz Theatre, Oct. 2017

April Simone, a third-year student at the Ritz School, will join Florence Academy of Fine Arts Tanner Rhodes, as they perform the one-act play “Ferryboat.” Rhodes and Simone have performed together in the Tennessee Valley Art Association’s SummerStock at the Ritz and most recently appeared together in the musical “Opal” at the Ritz Theatre.
Rhodes will take on the role of Biff, with Simone playing Amite, as the two characters interact on a New Orleans ferry.  David Hope, director, praised the play’s character work. The play is short, only about 30 minutes long, but features a tremendous amount of dialogue. Both Simone and Rhodes are planning to pursue a theater degree in college and Hope believes this show will further develop their skill set.  “I wanted them to have an opportunity, before they go to college, to really do a straight drama and really sink their teeth into a difficult character role,” he said. “When you’ve got nothing but two people on a stage for 30 minutes, that’s quite an acting exercise. It will help prepare them for the next leg of their career, give them some stronger acting legs.”
In addition to the play, third-year Ritz School students Jolee Burkett and Abbey Jones will each sing a solo and then sing a duet together. Burkett, Jones and Simone have all taken voice under Gene Anne Gifford and acting and dance classes through the Ritz School of Performing Arts.
