New Year’s Eve celebrants should not drink and drive. For those who drink and need help getting home, AAA Alabama can help.

AAA’s Tow-for-Life program will pay for a tow truck to take intoxicated drivers and their vehicle home. The service is open to AAA members and non-members.

20475743_BG1To request a free tow, call  1-800-222-4357 (1-800-AAA-HELP), between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Thursday.

The free towing service is limited to 10 miles. The vehicle must be operable to qualify for a free tow. The vehicle will be towed to the home of the driver or owner.

Another way to celebrate the start of a new year, that is gaining popularity, is going hiking on Jan. 1.cane-creek-canyon-hike

Susann Hamlin, executive director of Colbert County Tourism and Convention Bureau, said Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve, 251 Loop Road, Tuscumbia, is a perfect place for a First Day Hike. The privately owned nature preserve includes 11 miles of hiking trails that wind past waterfalls, rock formations, scenic vistas and massive trees. Admission is free.

The walking trails at the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Muscle Shoals Reservation are also a great place for a First Day Hike, Hamlin said.
