Dr. Richard Showers, Sr. Dr. Richard Showers, Sr., represented District 1, and was first elected to the City Council in 1988. He retired on July 1, 2005, from the Huntsville City Schools where he was a Career Technical Education Teacher. Dr. Showers received his educational training from Alabama A&M University and Auburn University. He earned the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Alabama A&M University, and an Adult and Continuing Education Certificate from Auburn University. In recognition of his service to humanity, he received an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Humanities.

Dr. Showers serves or has served as a board member of numerous professional, civic and community organizations where he uses and used his talents, skills and expertise to add value to the organizations’ mission. Some of his membership include: Planning Commission, Metropolitan Planning Committee, Clean Community Committee, Historical Preservation Authority, Zoning Subcommittee, Local Emergency Planning Committee, Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments, Community Action Agency, and Alabama A&M University Board of Trustees. Additionally, he is a life member of Huntsville Alumni Chapter, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Alabama A&M University Alumni Association, Inc. and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

At Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, he is an active and faithful member where he serves as a deacon. In the religious sector, Dr. Showers serves or has served as a board member of the following organizations: President, Alabama State Missionary Baptist Laymen’s Movement; First Vice President, National Baptist Laymen’s Movement, and trustee, Selma University.

He has received scores of awards and honors in recognition of his tireless service to mankind. Some of his awards include; Lifetime Achievement Award, Union Chapel Christian Academy Foundation, Inc.; Distinguished Service Award, Greater Interdenominational Ministerial Fellowship; Unity Award, Alpha Phi Alpha Education Foundation, Delta Theta Lambda Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; Excellence Award, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); and Presidential Citation/Distinguished Alumnus Alabama A&M University, National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO).

Dr. Showers and his wife, Bettye Ann, are the proud parents of five children.
