Richard E. Knie – Obituary

Lt. Colonel Richard E. Knie, age 90 of Lewisburg, died Monday, May 04, 2015 in NHC Oakwood Healthcare.

Lt. Colonel Knie was a native of New London, Connecticut and son of the late Walter and Kate Moriarty Knie. He served his country in three different wars, WWII, Korea and Vietnam during his thirty year career in the U.S. Air Force. After his retirement from the Air Force he served as the Executive Vice President for Greater Birmingham Homebuilders Association. He was a member of the Lewisburg First United Methodist Church.

After his second retirement, he and his wife settled in southern middle Tennessee where they bred and raised Angus cattle and llamas. During this time, Richard took up his hobby of building ship models using the actual blueprints of navy battle vessels. Many of his model ships are now in museums and private collections.

He is survived by his wife of twenty-eight years, Toni Mahoney Knie of Lewisburg, four daughters, Susan C. Bennett, Barbara K. Holtzclaw, Patricia A. Knie, and Carol Elizabeth Reynolds, two sons, Colonel John C. Knie and Robert Mahoney Knie, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted Friday, May 8, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. from the Lewisburg First United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the Nashville National Cemetery 1420 Gallatin Road South Madison, Tennessee 57115 at 2:00 p.m. with full Military honors.
