Obituary of Richard Diemer Pryor
Richard Diemer Pryor, born March 22, 1963 in Athens, Alabama, passed away April 24th, 2020. Richard was preceded in death by his father, Luke Pryor, and his mother, Betty Lamb Pryor, of Tanner, Alabama.

Richard is survived by his four siblings, Luke Pryor, Lila Pryor Frank, Patty Pryor Davis (Lucian), Schuyler Pryor (Jan), and his nieces and nephews, Grady Frank III, Lou Pryor Drobnick, Katie Pryor, Schuyler Pryor III, Ida Pryor, Peyton Davis, and Lila Davis.

Richard graduated from Decatur High School and earned a BA degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Following college he played drums for Drivin N Cryin and Concrete Blond before pursuing his interest in flying. He earned his private pilot’s license, instrument ratings, commercial rating, CFI Certified Flight Instructor, CFII Certified Flight Instructor for Instruments and Multi Engine Rating. He attended flight schools including Bolivar and Tulsa School of Aeronautics. He lived in Baltimore, Maryland and was a flight instructor at Baltimore Washington International.

Richard returned to his passion for drumming, an innate talent fostered from the age of five. He played with many bands across different genres and did studio work while living in Nashville, earning the title of one of Music City’s top ten drummers. Richard was the former drummer for the Willie Heath Neal & The Damned Old Opry. He performed with Willies “Live From Somewhere Unknown album”. Bands played in (and albums played on): Lillie Mae (Rain On The Piano), Travis Stephens (Between Someday and Never), Kenneth Brian Band (Welcome to Alabama), Willie Heath Neal & The Cowboy Killers (Live Album), Ether Dogs, Brian N. Hooks Band, Floyd the Barber, Escape Goats (Get Loose), Uncle Slim, Shadow 15 (Greatest Hits Album), and Peace Cry.

Richard cared deeply for the family farm. He lived on and farmed the land for the family for a number of years. He was excited to learn about farming while continuing to fly and play drums.

Richard had a special affection for Palm Springs, CA where he spent the last years of his life, and made many friends. He enjoyed playing golf and playing as a guest drummer for various bands.

Among Richard’s many gifts were his charm, kindness and his boundless approach to life. He enjoyed golfing and covering the country on his motorcycles, forming bonds along the way. A steadfast friend, Richard was beloved by many and lived “high, wide and handsome” until the end. His big smile, mischievous laugh and unparalleled storytelling will be sorely missed by those who knew him. At Richard’s own instruction, “When I die, tell them I had a good time.”

A private burial will be attended by Richard’s immediate family. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Southern Aviation Restoration Fund in Richard’s memory. Donations can be sent to: Learjetjohn Aviation Pryor Field Regional Airport 21106 Flight Line Road Tanner, AL 35671
