Richard David Nelms, 72, died Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at his home. He was born in Greenwood on August 30, 1951, to Elmer Nelms and Willodine Blake Nelms. Following his high school graduation, Richard had a very long and successful career as a heavy machine operator. He was a retired member of the 624 local chapter of the International Union of Operating Engineers, and a decade member of the National Committee of Certified Crane Operators. On October 26, 2002, he married, his starshine, Jackie. They are members of Antioch Community Church. Although his career often got in the way of many hobbies, he enjoyed bowling and being outdoors, especially camping.
Richard is survived by his wife of 21 years, Jackie Nelms of the Reform Community; son, Rick Nelms and his wife, Sara, of Saltillo; one grandson, Landon Nelms; one sister, Lana Odom of Ridgeland; and one brother, Steve Nelms of Tupelo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Charles Nelms.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. until service time Saturday, December 30, 2023 at Pegues, Tupelo
Services honoring his life will be 1 p.m. Saturday, December 30, 2023 at the Jefferson Street Chapel of Pegues with Dr. Gayle Alexander officiating. Graveside services will follow in Lee Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Rick Nelms, Mario Perez, David Odom, and Daniel Odom.
