Money from State House of Representatives Education Trust Fund Budget Would Be Matched with $250,000 from Board of Education
MONTGOMERY– Representative Johnny Mack Morrow, from Red Bay, introduced Franklin County Schools Superintendent Greg Hamilton to the powerful Education Trust Fund Ways and Means Committee meeting this morning. They strongly and effectively advocated for funding for Vina High School to repair the band and science lab buildings which were damaged in a tornado over two years ago.
“I asked Chairman Poole if I could speak along with Superintendent Hamilton,” Morrow said. “We told the members of the committee that this was a safety issue. The band and science labs can’t be in the damaged buildings, and it’s unfair for them to be in a portable classroom. If we are serious about education and infrastructure we need to work with the people in Vina and Franklin County to find a way to repair this facility.”
In Alabama, funding measures must originate in one body of the legislature or the other. This year, the budget process is starting in The House of Representatives. Both the House and Senate have a committee process, and must approve budgets by a vote of the body as a whole. Once it passes from the House to the Senate, it will be incumbent on the Senate to vote to make sure the funds stay in the final version of the budget.
“The legislative process can be long and tedious, so this is just the first step,” Morrow said. “But, there is nothing more important to me than protecting our children, and making sure they have safe and secure places to learn — I’ve been doing it my whole career – it’s the right thing to do.”
