Surrounded by her family, Rebecca “Becky” Lynn Newbern Hill passed peacefully from this life and into the arms of her Lord and Savior on July 31, 2024. Becky was born on March 14,1949 in Florence, Alabama to Willard and Drusilla Newbern. She attended Coffee High School where she met the love of her life, Charles Thomas Hill, Jr. They were married on December 22, 1965, and spent the next almost 59 years living out a real-life love story, having three children along the way: Natalie, Charles, and Baby Hill.
Becky was a woman of many talents and interests, with music being one of her greatest passions. She dedicated herself to her lessons and learned early on to play the piano exceptionally well. She loved playing, loved listening to the music as it filled the room, and eventually she began giving piano lessons to others, sharing that passion and her gift with students for years, all the way from Alabama to Arizona. Becky also enjoyed sewing, traveling, painting, and cooking (her chocolate gravy was legendary), but most of all she loved spending time with family. She retained strong ties with her roots, and for 20 years took great joy in planning the annual Bendall family reunion. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She was known as “Mimi” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who describe her as loving, thoughtful, strong, generous, and faithful. She was the matriarch of their clan, their biggest supporter, and she thrived in their midst. Becky’s daughter described who her mother was to their family in this way: “She was our compass, and HER compass was God’s Word.”
First and foremost, Becky was a child of God; a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. She was an active member of Weatherly Heights Church of Christ, supporting her husband in his role as an elder, teaching children’s Bible class, and leading ladies’ Bible studies. Her spirit was warm and welcoming, her faith was strong, and she led by example. She was a true example of the Proverbs 31 woman: “She is clothed in strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness.”
Becky was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Sabrena Newbern; her son, Baby Hill; and her sister-in-law, Martha Newbern.
She is survived and will be deeply missed by her husband of 58 years, Tommy Hill; son, Charles Thomas Hill lll and wife, Penny Carlson Hill; daughter, Natalie Hill Frazier and husband, Henry Buchanan Frazier; grandchildren, Jonathan Thomas Frazier (Lindsay), Rebecca Ann Frazier-Smith (Mark), Jacob Tyler Frazier, Charles Thomas Hill lV (Carley), Carley Hill Rodriguez (Jordan), and William Carlson Hill (Mae); five great-grandchildren, Harrison Smith, Lucy Ann Frazier, Barrett Frazier, Elliot Frazier, and Mila Rodriguez; brothers, Clarence Edward Newbern (Sharon) and Gerald Lane Newbern; and a host of loving friends.
Services will be held at Laughlin Service Funeral Home on Sunday, August 4, 2024. Visitation will begin at noon, with a memorial service in celebration of Becky’s life to follow at 1:00 pm. Internment will take place later Sunday in Florence, Alabama.
