This is something new for us at Hammer Down Gun & Pawn. We are helping to sponsor the 15th Annual Rally at the River on June 10th, 2017. The event will be held at McFarland Park, located in Florence, Alabama. This is the first time that we have been a sponsor for a nonprofit event such as this. The Charity that will be helped by the proceeds from this event is the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This is an organization that I feel very strongly needs help from the community.
From Wikipedia:
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, founded in 1962, is a pediatric treatment and research facility focused on children’s catastrophic diseases. The hospital costs about $2 million a day to run and no family ever pays for their child to go to St. Jude. It is located in Memphis, Tennessee, and is a nonprofit medical corporation.
St. Jude was founded by entertainer Danny Thomas in 1962. Discoveries at St. Jude have completely changed how doctors treat children with cancer and other catastrophic illnesses. Since St. Jude was established, the survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common type of childhood cancer, has increased from 4 percent in 1962 to 94 percent today.
During this time, the overall survival rate for childhood cancers has risen from 20 percent to 80 percent. St. Jude has treated children from across the United States and from more than 70 countries. Doctors across the world consult with St. Jude on their toughest cases. Also, St. Jude has an International Outreach Program to improve the survival rates of children with catastrophic illnesses worldwide through the transfer of knowledge, technology and organizational skills.
Rally at the River is held each year to help raise funds for the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. I spoke with the Rally at the River Coordinator Peggy McCollum about the event. Peggy told me that the Southern Cruisers use to host the event but no longer did. So, Rally at the River was taken over by a group of volunteers who donate their time to get this event ready. She further stated that it takes about a year to plan the event.
As stated above, this is the 15th year for Rally at the River. Peggy told me that the Bands that will be playing are donating their time also to help raise money for the event. To date, Rally at the River has raised $184,000 for the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. There will be a motorcycle ride the morning of the event. Door prizes will be given away.
To help raise money for the event, two guns have been donated to be raffled off. The guns are a Browning BPS 12 Gauge Camo Shotgun and a CZ-USA 20 Gauge Over & Under Shotgun. The two guns are on display at Hammer Down Gun & Pawn in Sheffield, AL. Raffle tickets are $10 each or 12 for $100. The two guns will be given away on the day of the event. Tickets can be purchased at Hammer Down.
So, bring the kids and the whole family out to McFarland Park on June 10th, 2017 for a fun day of music and entertainment. Help support this great charity. Hope to see you there.
