Press Statement FROM ALEA ON Officer-Involved Shooting In Colbert County

COLBERT COUNTY – On Thursday, Aug. 29, at the request of Colbert County Sheriff’s
Office, Special Agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of
Investigation (SBI) launched an investigation into an officer‐involved shooting involving
deputies with the Colbert County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred when deputies assisted law enforcement officers from Mississippi with a vehicle pursuit that crossed over state lines into Alabama. The pursuit ultimately ended on Daryl Lane in Leighton within Colbert County.

The suspect, identified as John William Griffin, 53, of Iuka, Miss., was injured as a result of
gunfire and transported to a local hospital for treatment. No officers were injured over the course
of the incident.

Nothing further is available as the investigation is ongoing. Once complete, the findings will be
turned over to the Colbert County District Attorney’s Office.
