Popcorn bar, Mardi Gras parade with a purpose, fish for a cure

ATHENS-Some upcoming events including a Valentine’s Day themed event at High Cotton Arts tomorrow and the annual Mardi Gras Block Party next week. This year’s Mardi Gras Block Party includes a parade with a purpose. Groups are decorating shopping carts on loan from Lowe’s and will collect canned goods from spectators during the parade to donate to LCCI food bank. There are a couple of carts open for adoption. Email me if you are interested in decorating one for Tuesday night.

Sweet’art Saturday Festivities on Feb. 10

 

  • High Cotton Arts, 103 W. Washington St.
  • 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Live music with Sharpshooter and free popcorn bar with candy toppings
  • Artists will offer specials and Valentine’s themed art for sale such as paintings, pottery, stained glass, cards, and more
  • Vendors will sell frames, City of Athens bicentennial coins, and local author Karen Middleton will sell her new book “Dr. Brown A Klondike Love Story.”

 

Mardi Gras Block Party Event Line-up for Feb. 13

 

High Cotton Arts, 103 W. Washington St.

  • 5:30-6:30 p.m.
  • Free Mardi Gras mask making craft for children
  • Free wagon decorating for children who want to participate in the parade
  • Pickup location for decorated shopping carts

Athens State University Center for Lifelong Learning, 121 S. Marion St.

  • 5:30-6:30 p.m.
  • International Crane Foundation information booth
  • Free bead making station

March with the Athens State University Artheads

  • 6:30 p.m. in front of the Center for Lifelong Learning
  • Will march on Marion and Washington streets
  • Athens High Dixieland Band will be in front of the Center for Lifelong Learning
  • Small ensemble from East Limestone Marching Band will be in front of High Cotton Arts
  • Theme: Things That Fly
  • Bring canned beans or other canned good to put in the shopping cart floats for donation to the LCCI food bank.

City of Athens Relay for Life/Limestone Cattlemen’s Steak Sandwich Lunch

  • March 27, 2018, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1917 U.S. 72, Athens
  • $10
  • Includes sandwich and chips. Drinks for dine in only
  • Dine in, carry out, and deliveries for orders of 5 or more
  • Ribeyes are cooked on site by members of the Limestone Cattlemen’s Association

City of Athens Relay for Life Bass Fishing Touranment

  • April 7, 2018, at Ingalls Harbor in Decatur from safelight to 3 p.m.
  • $100 per boat early registration; $110 after March 30
  • Big Fish Pot Optional ($10 per boater)
  • Lunch provided, and door prizes to be given away for registered boaters
  • The WOW! Top Fishing Team Grand Prize is $4,000, and the top team will win custom made rods by Grassy Custom Rods & Tackle
  • Proceeds Benefit the American Cancer Society.

City of Athens Relay for Life Celebrity Waiters Night

  • April 17, 2018, from 5-8 p.m.
  • Applebee’s at U.S. 72 and Interstate 65, Athens
  • Tip your favorite celebrity waiter to support the American Cancer Society. The celebrity waiters compete to see who can raise the most in tips.
  • This year’s waiters are: Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks, East Limestone Band Director and reigning champ Jennifer “Miss Sam” Janzen, Athens High Football Coach Cody Gross, Athens Police Officer Michael Stainbrook, and Athens Firefighter Lee Marker
