HILLSBORO – Along a wide-spot in the road between Courtland and Decatur is the recently-restored home of General Joe Wheeler. Wheeler, a hero of the Civil War and the Spanish-American war, would be 177 years old this month.
To celebrate this occasion, the Alabama Historical Commission held a big birthday party for the only former Confederate General who was re-commissioned in the United States Army after his service the “War of Northern Aggression”.
