Ms. Phylis Thornton Hudgins, age 84, passed away on Monday, December 30, 2024, at
Cumberland Health & Rehab. Phylis was born on April 17, 1940, in Detroit, MI to
Haskell and Ragnhild Thornton.
Throughout her life, Phylis encountered many struggles, yet her story serves as a reminder of the complexity of human nature and the many facets of a person’s journey. Her life left an imprint on those who knew her. She became a widow at a young age. In her forties, Phylis faced the unexpected challenge of losing her vision. She adapted to her new reality with remarkable strength. While the loss of her eyesight changed her world, it did not diminish her spirit. She continued to engage in the activities she loved, finding new ways to connect with others, and participate in the world around her. Her journey was a testament to the power of perseverance and a reminder that life’s challenges are often opportunities for growth.
Phylis is survived by her children: Linda McAdams (Tom), Gail Burton (Ronald), Radford
Hudgins, and Nancy Guess; grandchildren: Ashley Chisenall, Aaron Dendy (Erin), Corey Dendy, and Tiffany Steele (Hunter); great-grandchildren: Malli Lusk, Cannon Chisenall, Alimae Dendy, Presley Dendy, Palmer Dendy, and baby boy Steele on the way.
In addition to her parents, Phylis was preceded in death by her husband, Radford (Ray) Hudgins, and her sister, Jean King.
The family of Phylis wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to all extended family and friends for the cards, visits, and meaningful conversations that brought her joy and connection throughout the years, and especially during her declining health. Your love and support were a source of comfort and strength to her. The family would also like to extend their deepest gratitude to the dedicated hospice team at Enhabit Hospice and also to Cumberland Health & Rehab.
