Phillip Wayne Campbell died Wednesday, November 1, 2023 in Grandview Hospital in Birmingham. He was 69 years old.
Although he had been undergoing intensive treatment for colon cancer, his death by cardiac arrest was unexpected.
Phil was born on August 10, 1954 to Carl Campbell and Eula Beatrice Benefield. He attended public schools in Scottsboro, and he graduated from Scottsboro High School in 1972.
At Scottsboro High School, Phil played basketball where his 6-feet 6-inch height gave him a considerable advantage. After high school, he played basketball at Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC). After NACC, he continued his education at Jacksonville State University.
After completing his formal education, Phil joined the Scottsboro Fire Department where he served for his entire professional career. After retirement, he lived in Rosalie where he shared his life with longtime companion Sandra Darwin.
He was preceded in death by his father, Carl, in 1987, and his mother, Bea, in 2001. He is survived by his sister, Deborah Carlene Campbell of Birmingham and nearly 20 first cousins.
He will be remembered as a faithful friend, loving brother, and an ardent University of Alabama football fan.
At his request, no ceremony of remembrance will be held.
