Peter Douglas Lackey, born on April 19, 1963, in Sheffield, Alabama, passed away on May 15, 2024. He was a native of Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
Peter is survived by his beloved spouse, Jeri Kaye Lackey; his mother, Evelyn Lackey; and his siblings, John Lackey, Laura (Lackey) Simpson and her spouse, Ken Simpson, Paul Lackey and his spouse, Denise Lackey, Phillip Lackey and his spouse, Mollie Lackey, and Joseph Lackey and his spouse, Gale Lackey. He is also survived by fifteen cherished nieces and nephews. Peter was preceded in death by his father, Bobby Joe Lackey. He was a member of Woodward Avenue Baptist Church.
He was a 1981 graduate of Muscle Shoals High School, attended Auburn University where he was a Sigma Chi, and a 1987 graduate of The University of North Alabama earning separate degrees in Biology and Chemistry.
Peter was affectionately known in the Shoals and surrounding areas as WBTG DJ Doug Douglas. Early in his professional career he worked to harvest corneas for the Lions Eye Bank, an organization supporting the Alabama Organ and Tissue Donation Alliance. He moved to Birmingham where he was a quality control chemist for Barber’s Dairy in Birmingham, AL. Moving to Atlanta, he worked as a research, development, and quality chemist for SSS Tonic. He then spent twenty-seven years working as a Research and Development Scientist for Novartis Pharmaceuticals developing contact lenses and ophthalmic patents.
Peter’s lifelong passion for comics and graphic novels fueled many vibrant conversations. His jovial personality and love for a good joke were his most endearing traits, and he was greatly loved by his family and friends. Those who knew Peter loved him deeply, and he will be profoundly missed.
A service to remember Peter will be held at York Bluff Baptist Church, 301 Atlanta Avenue, Sheffield, AL 35660, on Saturday, May 25. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 3:00 p.m., with interment at Colbert Memorial Gardens. The service will be officiated by Monty Franklin. Pallbearers will be Dale Hooper, Vincent Ledlow, Ravi Parihar, Tony Riley, Jay Simmons, and Dan Thompson.
In lieu of flowers, Peter would have wanted donations to be made to the American Heart Association or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
