The town of Krivenik in South East Kosovo was hit hard during the war that lasted from 28 February 1998 until 11 June 1999. Villagers came back to find that much of their town had been destroyed and that the surrounding area was mined. These land mines, if triggered, would detonate and could kill or maim anyone nearby.
The Halo Trust partnered with Google Maps to pinpoint these mines and then clear them. Google Map technology allows people to see where the mines are to avoid them. In the meantime, Halo is clearing mines and since 2008, has cleared 10 minefields.
