Penelope Van Dyke Moore Blankenship, of Huntsville, Alabama (formerly of Florence, Alabama) passed away on June 8, 2019 at the age of 83. Penelope was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on April 11, 1936 to Auburn and Penelope (Allen) Moore. She attended Girls Preparatory School and graduated from Saint Mary’s School, Sewanee, Tennessee. Penelope worked for the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library as a librarian. She loved to read, knit, and work crossword puzzles. She had a wicked sense of humor and was known as the grammar police by her grandsons, whom she loved dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her daughter, Penelope Van Dyke Blankenship. She is survived by her daughter, Isabella Blankenship Coffell and son-in-law, Keith; brothers, Peter Moore (Katherine) of Charlotte, NC, and Alex Moore (Wendy) of Stuart, Florida; and sister, Helen Maroon (Jerry) of Jacksonville, Florida. She is also survived by her grandchildren who were the light of her life, AJ Herston (Erin), Robert Herston (Ariele), and Tiffanie Duke (Rodney); great-grandchildren, Raylan and Remington Herston, Caroline and Madalyn Herston, Alyssa and Rylan Duke; and nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
Memorials may be given to the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library or an animal shelter of your choice.
The family of Penelope wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Naveen Tangutur, Dr. Kanth Katragadda and the nurses on the 5th floor of Huntsville Hospital who took care of her during her last week.
