Peggy Lankford Bailey, 82, passed away February 8, 2024 in Jackson, Alabama. Peggy was born December 26, 1941 in Fort Payne, Alabama, to the late Rev. William Benjamin Lankford and Lillie Mae Kean Lankford, as the youngest of five children. She was a 1960 graduate of Fort Payne High School. Peggy married Ben Bailey in May of 1962.
Peggy was a lifelong resident of DeKalb County until moving to live with her daughter and family in 2016. She made a career working for Vulcraft as a computer programmer and systems analyst until retirement.
Peggy enjoyed her family, loved her husband Ben, and was her grandchildren’s biggest fan. Her favorite interests were Crimson Tide football, New York Times crosswords, her Shih-Tzu, Chloe, working on family genealogy and DeKalb County history. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, Alabama, where she attended with her daughter and family.
She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne (Chris) Bailey, her grandchildren Griffin (Joy) Hansen and Sarah (Brady) Turner and expected great-granddaughter Meredith Harding Turner (March 2024), as well as a sister, Benetta Lankford Hughes and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Bailey, infant son, Benjamin Lankford Bailey, her sisters, Virginia Lankford Reed and Mary Ann Hester and brother, Terry Kean Lankford.
Internment will be at graveside in Glenwood Cemetery on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, and because of her love for animals, those wishing to honor her memory are requested to make a donation to Friends of DeKalb County, Alabama Animal Adoption Center.
