Paul Kunitz, 88, of Huntsville, passed away Sunday, November 6. Son of Rachel and Benjamin Kunitz, Paul was born in Long Island, NY, and grew up in Cedarhurst, NY. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, where he received his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering in1956 then 2 days later married the love of his life Judith Greene. They had 3 daughters, Sharon born in New York then Lisa and Heidi born in Huntsville.

After a short stint in the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant, Paul was a successful Electrical Engineer for 5 years then changed career paths and became a successful businessman for over 48 years. He retired in 2010.

Paul was a member of Temple B’nai Sholom for most of his years in Huntsville. He enjoyed singing with the choir. He served as Temple President from 1968 to 1970. He was actively involved in the Jewish Federation of North AL, serving a term as president, and was a member of the Jewish War Veterans.

Paul enjoyed singing and acting so was involved in most of Huntsville’s theatre and music groups. He was a Barber-shopper for over 20 years where he served as president and sang in several quartets as well as singing in the chorus.

His next music love was Huntsville Community Chorus. He sang and did musical theatre with HCC for over 37 years. He considered himself fortunate to get some great roles, his favorite being the role of Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof” three times. He was a natural! He also had major roles in “Oklahoma,” “Hello Dolly” and “My Fair Lady.” He enjoyed sharing the stage with his family. He and Judy did so as husband and wife twice.

He volunteered at the Senior Center where, along with Judy, he packed lunches for Meals on Wheels.

Paul became a Rotarian in the early 60’s. He was very proud to be a member of their Strive Program in which he mentored 2 Lee High School students.Paul was loved and respected by all who were lucky enough to know him. He was a great hugger and gave them out freely.

Paul is survived by his wife Judy Kunitz and daughter Lisa Walker, grandchildren Rachel (Isaac), Brian (Kelly), Amanda, Sammy and Ellie and 7 great grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his daughters Cantor Sharon Ilene Kunitz and Heidi Maria Kunitz.

A funeral service will be Friday, November 11, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. Burial will be Sunday, November 13, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Maple Hill Cemetery. There will not be a graveside service so please feel free to share a poem, song or a few words if you attend.
