threatened to commit suicide.

She left the residence and went to a service station on U.S. 72 to call police. She later advised the dispatcher her husband had called her after she reported the incident to police and said he was going to pick up their children from school. Lt. Steve Moore notified officers that the husband likely was headed to one of the schools.

Police Chief Floyd Johnson said officers learned the couple has three children who each go to a different school. One attends Brookhill Elementary, one attends Athens Middle School, and one attends Athens High School.

“We sent officers to each of the schools and notified all three principals and the superintendent about the situation,” Johnson said.

Officer Randy Vickers saw the husband, identified by police as Louis Jermaine Cattage, 32, of 108 Cedar Street, Athens. Cattage was driving on Minuteman Drive toward Brookhill Elementary. Cattage did not stop at the school but instead headed to Sanderfer Road when Vickers drove up behind his vehicle.

Vickers stopped Cattage on Sanderfer Road and took him into custody. Cattage had a 25-caliber handgun loaded with one bullet in his possession.

Police have charged Cattage with third-degree domestic violence and carrying a pistol without a permit.

The case still is under investigation. Chief Johnson will release any further details on Wednesday, August  21.

“No one at the schools was ever threatened, and all the city schools have restricted access,” Johnson said. “My officers and the school system responded as they were supposed to, and we were able to get this situation resolved quickly.”
