Owen Morton (Mort) Shearer, 83, of Springfield, TN, passed away (as peacefully as possible) after a very short battle with pneumonia, with his family by his side in the early morning hours of November 20, 2021, at NorthCrest Medical Center.
His remains were cremated and memorial services will be conducted at a later date.
Mr. Shearer was born September 08, 1938 in Covington, KY to the late Bro. William Morton and Anne Holland Fagan Shearer. He was retired owner/operator of Mort’s ‘World Famous” Market in Springfield and previous owner of 49 Market, also in Springfield. Mort was a member of Coopertown Church of Christ.
Mort graduated from Coopertown High School. He attended college at UT Memphis and graduated with a double major in Chemistry and Biology. After college, he joined the United States Marine Corps and become a helicopter pilot in 1963, later joining the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in an incredibly brave rescue mission, forever immortalized in Life Magazine.
Mort never met a stranger. He loved nature, books and helping others. He raised his daughters to embrace, encourage and practice kindness and curiosity.
Mort is preceded in death by his wife, Diana Maria Lipscomb Shearer and sister, Norma Shearer Adams.
Mr. Shearer is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn Anne Shearer and Danny Konkle, of Huntsville, AL and daughter Rebecca Lee Shearer, of Chattanooga, TN.
He was loved by his family and friends and will be deeply missed.
