It is with regret we announce the death of Mr. Oscar Milton McWithey, age 88, of Flintville, formerly of Poultney, Vermont. Mr. McWithey passed away Sunday, January 22, 2017 at Donaldson Care Center. He was a native of Poultney, VT and the son of the late Oscar Theodore and Ninoa Kinney McWithey.
Mr. McWithey graduated high school at the age of 16 and had to wait a year to enter the U.S. Coast Guard. He served in WWII in the Coast Guard then served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. McWithey attended Ohio State University and received a Bachelors of Science Degree from the University of Vermont. At the young age of 75, Mr. McWithey was the oldest member serving on the Poultney, VT Rescue Squad. He was an engineer with IBM and worked on Sikorsky Helicopters and the Apollo Program. Mr. McWithey loved to sing and spread joy wherever he went.
Mr. McWithey is survived by his sons Kevin (Debbie) McWithey of Flintville, and Keith (Mary Ann) McWithey of Indiana; daughter Diane (Bill) McCandless of Decature, AL; grandchildren Jonathan (Tina) Fowler, Kevin Lee (Rachel) McWithey, Emily (Josh) Church, Molly (Parker) Maish, Ryan McWithey; and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, June Emily Ray McWithey on October 23, 2015.
Visitation with the family will be 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at Higgins Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Flintville First Baptist Church up coming mission trip. Higgins Funeral Home is honored to be assisting the family of Mr. Oscar Milton McWithey.
Durfree Funeral Home in Fair Haven, VT will be conducting graveside services at a later date in Poultney, VT.
