Oscar Fielder Moomaw – Obituary

OscarOscar Fielder Moomaw, a lifelong resident of Florence, passed away on July 25, 2014, at his residence. Fielder is survived by his wife, Shelby Phillips Moomaw. He was the beloved father of daughters Mary Ann Haeger (Larry) of Marietta, Georgia, and Martha Beadle (Greg) of Florence as well as the grandfather of Jeffrey Haeger and Stephen Wesley Haeger of Marietta, Georgia; Samuel Christopher Beadle, Williams Gregory Beadle(Ashley) and Mary Elizabeth Beadle of Florence. He was the great grandfather of Hudson Gregory Beadle, Theodore Wayne Beadle and Henrietta Hill. He is also survived by his sister, Pearl Holland, many nieces and nephews and three stepdaughters: Sharon McKinney, Sheila Phillips, Charlotte Phillips and Gary Phillips. He was preceded in death by the mother of his daughters, Henrietta Williams Moomaw; his parents, Edward and Beulah Moomaw; brothers, Ellis and Stevenson Wesley (Ted) Moomaw; sisters, Grace Marks, Evelyn Wilkes, Lois Quigley, Lillian Murphy, and Dot McFarland.

Fielder was a U. S. Army veteran serving during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was stationed in India where he helped to build the Burma Road. One of his favorite memories was his 2008 Honor Flight to Washington D.C. to visit the World War II Memorial. He also served as a Florence Fireman until his retirement in September 1984.

He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Florence. He enjoyed driving the church van and bringing many of his friends to church. He also helped to cut the church’s grass even after the age of 90. 

Farming was also an important part of his life having grown up as the son of a farmer in northern Lauderdale County. He loved to have a garden and to raise cattle and hogs. Often his calves were named and treated as pets. Attending the Florence Livestock Auction and visiting with other farmer friends was one of his favorite pastimes. Another favorite was watching the Atlanta Braves whenever they were on television.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 28 at 11:00 a.m. in Greenview Memorial Chapel in Florence, Alabama, with Reverend John Bradshaw officiating. Visitation will be held in the chapel one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow at Greenview Memorial Park.

Larry Haeger, Samuel Gregory Beadle, Jeffrey Haeger, Stephen Wesley Haeger, Williams Gregory Beadle, Randall Holt, and Mitchell Glen Holland will serve as pall bearers. Honorary pall bearers will be retired and current members of the Florence Fire Department and Landon Holt.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the First Church of the Nazarene at 102 Fairground Road in Florence, Alabama.
