Ora Battle Childress

Mother Ora Battle Childress Mrs. Ora Battle Childress, was born September 1, 1925 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Governor and Mathilda (Readus) Battle in Meridianville, Alabama. She departed this life Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at her home.

Ora, also known as “Oree”, accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was baptized in, and remained an active member of the Meridianville Primitive Baptist Church under the pastorage of early church patriarch Rev. W.H. Burwell. She remained a faithful member of Meridianville Primitive Baptist Church under the pastorage of Pastor Terrence Stewart, until she transitioned to be with the Lord and to eternal life with God. She was a member of the Mother board.

She was united in Holy Matrimony to “Rev” Lawrence Childress in August, 1946. Rev. Childress preceded her in death on January 31, 2023. To this union six children were born.  One son, Leon Childress, preceded her and Rev. Childress in death.

Mrs. Ora Battle Childress leaves to cherish her memories; two sisters: Geraldine Battle Bell of Huntsville Alabama; Elnora (Don) “Battle” Tibbs; four sons: Rev. Lawrence Childress, Jr. (Rev. Brenda) of San Jose, California; Charles Childress (Sharon); Rev. Dr. Maurice Childress (Mary); Billy Childress (Ann) all of Huntsville Alabama; one daughter; Alice Garrett Hardy, also of Huntsville, Alabama. She also leaves her Daughter in law, Willa Childress (Leon’s wife) and Brother in law, Larry Langford (Loretta’s husband).

Mrs. Ora Battle Childress was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Governor and Mrs. Mathilda (Readus) Battle; grandson, Michael Garrett; brothers: John H. Battle; Willie B. Battle; James E. Battle; J.B. Battle; Sisters: Lucy “Battle” Sledge; Elizabeth “Battle” Love; Anna “Battle” Stewart; and Loretta “Battle” Langford.

She also leaves to cherish her passing seventeen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members as well as friends.

The funeral service for Mother Ora Battle Childress will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 15, 2024 at the Saint Bartley Primitive Baptist Church (3020 Belafonte Avenue, Huntsville, AL 35816) with Moderator Mylon Burwell officiating. Interment will be in the Valhalla Memory Gardens. Mother Childress will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral time.

The Childress family will receive guests from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Friday, June 14, 2024 at the Royal Chapel of Memories.

Public viewing will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Friday, June 14, 2024 and 8:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m., Saturday, June 15, 2024 at the Royal Funeral Home.
