Opal Mays McMurry – Obituary

OpalOpal Mays McMurry, born of Fred Daniel Mays and Alma Cook Mays of Phil Campbell, Alabama on April 30, 1922 passed away at the age of 92 on Friday, April 03, 2015 at Madison Manor Nursing Home in Madison, Alabama after a brief illness.

“Miss Opal” was a retired merchant and operated McMurry’s Grocery Store in the Mill Village area of Russellville for over forty years. She was a member of Russellville First Baptist Church. She was a long time Sunday School teacher and well respected for her love of teaching and knowledge of the Bible.

The visitation will be 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 07, 2015 at Spry Memorial Chapel, Russellville, AL. The funeral will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home with Bro. Bert Fowler officiating. Burial will be at Knights of Pythias Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Othel “Cotton” McMurry; her parents; sisters, Eloise Glasgow, Mavis Brewer, Nell Herring, Virginia Parrish; and brother, Melvin Mays.

She leaves to cherish her memory her four children, Eva Kimbrough (husband, Bobby), Huntsville, Elaine Rogers (husband, Jerold), Russellville, Freddy McMurry (wife, Nancy), Huntsville, Hugh McMurry (wife, Kelly), Birmingham; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and brother, Robert Mays, of Phil Campbell; as well as a host of nieces & nephews.

The pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Spry Memorial Chapel assisted the family.
