Opal Marie Whisenant Bryant, 89 of the Center Grove Community, Somerville passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at Huntsville Hospital. She was born March 23, 1934, in Morgan County the daughter of Lorenza Dowery “Dowl” Whisenant and Meeter Williams Whisenant. She married Calvin O. “Shorty” Bryant July 5, 1952, and was married for 47 years at the time of his passing November 22, 1999. Opal worked in several different professions but spent most of her life as a homemaker. She grew up in the era of knowing what the meaning of hard work meant. She had a heart of gold, always thinking about everyone but herself, especially her three boys and their families. She was a member of the New Salem Baptist Church.
She is survived by a son: Terry Bryant, his wife Christie; daughters-in-law: Loretta Bryant and Sheila Bryant; grandchildren: Cody (Samantha) Bryant, Brittany (Michael) Woosley, Jake (Cassie) Bryant, Alex Bryant Tommy (Lena) Bryant, Teela Bryant and Crystal Bryant; a host of beloved great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. She was preceded by her husband: Calvin Bryant, sons: Steve Bryant and Lucky Bryant, a grandson: Derek Bryant, parents: Dowl and Meeter Whisenant, sisters: Mae Lenox, Ruth Morrow, Kathleen Sanders and Violet Briscoe; a brother: Paul Haynes, along with several young brothers and sisters.
Funeral Service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Gober Funeral Chapel with Brother Frankie Flack officiating. The burial will be in New Salem Cemetery, Gober Funeral Chapel directing. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Gober Funeral Chapel.
