Ollie Ruth Coffey Cox, 83, of Huntsville, AL passed away on September 2, 2024, after a brief illness. Ruth was born in Auburn, AL on November 13, 1940. She was raised in Albertville, AL. After graduating from Albertville High School, she attended Snead State Community College and Jacksonville State University where she earned a degree in education. Ruth went on to earn a master’s degree from Georgia State. She spent her entire teaching career in Georgia where she taught elementary school in Lilburn, Smyrna, and Ellijay. In 1991, Ruth was a founding member of Talking Rock Creek Chapel in Oakman, GA.
Ruth married Jule Cox in December 1999. After Jule’s passing, she moved back to Alabama. Ruth became an active member of Whitesburg Baptist Church, where she enjoyed being involved in Morning Glories, her Life Group, and many other ministries.
Ruth was preceded in death by her father, Pleasant Lee Coffey, her mother, Opal Faye Coffey, her husband, Jule Cox, and her fiancé, Gerry Staton. She is survived by sisters, Mary (Jackie) Leonard, and Martha (Lamar) Clayton; nieces, Lara (Andy) Grose, Stephanie Clayton, and Lindalee Clayton-Learned (Tom); great-nephews, Drew and Tyler Grose; daughter-in-love, Debi Edwards (Tom); and a host of cousins.
Visitation will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at Whitesburg Baptist South Campus. The service will follow at noon with Reverend Harold Fanning officiating. Burial will be on Friday, September 6, 2024, at noon at Haven of Rest Memorial Park in Calhoun, GA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ollie Ruth Coffey Cox Memorial Scholarship fund at the Delta Pi Nu chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. Ruth was passionate about helping young teachers and new administrators, so she established this scholarship in honor and memory of her family members who were educators.
