olinOlin Richardson Martin, 88, died Wednesday January 7, 2015, at home in Huntsville, Alabama. He leaves his wife of 66 years, Marjorie Marks Martin who he met in grade school in DeLand, Florida. Other survivors include his daughter; Peggy Nelson (Bill), son; Dr. Richard Martin (Lisa), 5 grandchildren; Jessica Steakley, Will Nelson (Johanna), Laine Martin, Clay Nelson, Susanne Hyde (Lee). He has 3 great grandchildren; Grayson and Brodie Steakley and Charlotte Hyde. Born in Quitman, Georgia, January 2, 1927 to Olin and Margaret Richardson Martin. He spent most of his life in DeLand, Florida. He was proud to be an Eagle Scout and later was a scout master. After graduating from DeLand High School he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. He completed his education at Georgia Institute of Technology in 1951. He earned a degree in Electrical Engineering and was vice president of his fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega. Upon graduation he joined Florida Power Corporation. In DeLand, Richard served the community in numerous ways. He was a City Commissioner, member of the DeLand Planning Board, past president of the DeLand Rotary Club (a Paul Harris Fellow), a director of Barnett Bank, a member of the West Volusia Historical Society and a lay leader at Trinity Methodist Church. The family will hold a private service on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Huntsville. Burial will be Maple Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Building Fund, 306 W. Wisconsin Avenue, DeLand, Florida, 32720. He was a man of strong faith, believing in the power and strength of Jesus Christ’s love and the peace that would await him.
