O.E. David Winborn O.E. David Winborn, 74, of Helena, Alabama, formerly of Florence, Alabama, passed away Sunday, October 22, 2023, at UAB Hospital, Birmingham, Alabama.

Visitation will be Wednesday, October 25, 2023, from 11-1 at Morrison Funeral Home, 12081 Highway 20, Florence, Alabama. The service will follow at 1:00 at the chapel with Robert Emerick officiating. Interment will be at Williams Chapel Presbyterian Church, Waterloo, Alabama.

David was a member of Riverchase Presbyterian Church, Hoover, Alabama, and was formerly a member of Williams Chapel Presbyterian Church, where he served as elder and lay speaker for many years.

David was a retired educator of 38 years. He taught and coached at Waterloo High School, Wilson High School, and Collinwood (TN) High School. David’s Warriors baseball team won the 1985 4A state championship, and he was inducted into the Lauderdale County Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. On April 7, 2023, he was honored to have the Wilson baseball stadium dedicated as the “David Winborn Baseball Field.”

David is survived by his wife of 47 years, Cathy Williams Winborn, of Helena; his son, Wesley Kyle Winborn and wife Kaitlin of Hoover; the absolute loves of his life, granddaughters Cora Jeanmarie Winborn and Clara Rose Winborn; his sister Rachel Holcombe (Florence, Alabama); niece Shelley Montgomery; and nephews Chris Holcombe and Jim Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Orlan E. and Elizabeth Corine Winborn; his sister, Sandra Winborn; and his father and mother-in-law, Roy Wesley and Clara Marie Williams.

The pallbearers will be Harold Hall, Norman Lovelady, Les Abston, Keith Herston, Keith Black, Scott Brown, and Mike Stamps. Honorary pallbearers are all of David’s former principals, coaches, and players.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Williams Chapel Cemetery Fund c/o Leonard Holcombe, 5950 County Road 1, Waterloo, Alabama 35677, or to Riverchase Presbyterian Church, 600 Riverchase Parkway West, Hoover, Alabama 35244.

David answered to many names: David, Coach, Coach Winborn, etc., but the one he was happiest to answer to was Papa.
