NWSCC Patriot athletics announces Susie Tverberg as volleyball coach

PHIL CAMPBELL-Northwest Shoals Community College (NWSCC) Patriots Athletic Director Taylor Franks announced today (8/20) that the college has hired Susie Tverberg as the new coach for the volleyball team.

“Coach Tverberg is a great fit for what we were looking for in a coach to build and lead our volleyball program,” said Franks. “Coach Tverberg is a product of Northwest Shoals and knows our community well. She grew up in Franklin County and played softball at Northwest Shoals on the Phil Campbell campus. She has coached softball and volleyball on the high school level and no one knows better than her about how important it is for our area athletes to have an opportunity to compete collegiately and further their education without having to leave home.”

Tverberg coached Belgreen High School’s volleyball team to regional playoff appearances from 2019-2022. She also led

Belgreen to the Franklin County Championship in 2021 and Class 1A Area 14 championships in 2020 and 2022.

According to Tverberg, it is hard to put into words what the opportunity to lead your alma mater means. “As a former Northwest Shoals student-athlete on the Phil Campbell campus and born and raised in Franklin County, I know what an incredibly special place this is,” said Tverberg. “I do not take the responsibility of leading our Patriot volleyball team lightly. Those who know me understand that I am not afraid of hard work. I am fully committed to bringing passion, energy, enthusiasm, a competitive spirit, and an unwavering work ethic to the court and recruiting trail every single day. Our area has tremendous talent, and I look forward to attending as many games as possible this fall looking for future Patriots.”

Overall, Tverberg has 11 years of high school softball and volleyball coaching experience with over 360 wins. Under her coaching, 14 players received an athletic scholarship to play collegiately. She is a seven-time Franklin County Times Coach of the Year and two-time TimesDaily 1A-3A Coach of the Year. She coached seven Franklin County championship teams.

She currently serves as a full-time Child Development instructor for NWSCC and is a 1991 alum of the College. She received her Bachelor of Science from Athens State and a Master of Education from The University of West Alabama (UWA). She plans to complete her Education Specialist degree from UWA this fall.

The Patriot volleyball team will have 14 scholarships available as well as possible walk-on opportunities.
