MUSCLE SHOALS-Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) will begin a Plumbing Technology Short-Term Certificate program this fall. The program plans to implement a work-based learning component in the near future.
“There is a growing demand in the plumbing industry nationwide, and we are excited to offer this training for our local workforce,” said NW-SCC President Dr. Glenda Colagross. “We hope to take this program and grow it into a successful work-based learning opportunity with the help of our local business and industry.”
The Plumbing Technology Short-Term Certificate program trains individuals to practice as licensed plumbers for residential and commercial environments. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters is projected to grow four percent from 2019 to 2029.

NW-SCC plans to develop a plumbing work-based learning model to mirror the Power5 HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) Program. The Power5 HVAC is the first nationally-recognized competency-based HVAC apprenticeship program in Alabama. It combines an Associate of Occupational Technology Degree (AOT) in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology and two years of paid industry experience.
During the fall semester, NW-SCC will offer Introduction to Plumbing, PLB 111, and Plumbing Applications, PLB 112.
