NW-SCC to hold Unity Celebration Wednesday, January 29th

MUSCLE SHOALS – Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) will feature a Unity Celebration on the Shoals campus on Wednesday, January 29, 2020.

Wednesday (1/29) the NW-SCC Cultural Affairs Committee and Patriot Peer Leaders will hold a Unity Celebration on the Shoals campus at 12 noon in the Hospitality Center. The event will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and feature a special performance from 2019 Miss Alabama Tiara Pennington, an inspirational message from Kaytrina P. Simmons, Florence City Council, District 1, and music by the NW-SCC Show Choir.

Tiara Pennington, of Helena, Ala., was crowned Miss Alabama 2019 in June and represented Alabama at the 2020 Miss America competition held in December of 2019. Pennington also served as Miss University of Alabama and was the first African-American winner of that competition.

At the University of Alabama, she is a member of Phi Mu Sorority and has earned President’s List, Dean’s List and International Dean’s List honors. She earned the UA Academic Excellence and Academic Distinction awards and is a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, Phi Sigma Pi, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars academic achievement organizations. Pennington has earned Duke of Edinburgh Gold and Silver Medals and has received proclamations from Alabama Governors Kay Ivey and Dr. Robert Bentley. Currently, she is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in political science and plans to attend law school.

Kaytrina P. Simmons is a Florence City Council representative for district one. She serves as the Council President Pro-Tem and is the first African-American female to be elected to the Florence City Council. Simmons serves on many non-profit organization board of directors and committees in Florence and the Shoals area as the President and Vice President.

Simmons is a native of Florence, Ala. and graduate of Central High School (Florence). She attended Faulkner University. She is the office manager at Snelling Staffing, and works part-time with Trinity Memorial Funeral Home.
