MUSCLE SHOALS-Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) is
working toward training students for over 400 injection molding positions in
the next 12-24 months.
NW-SCC plans to offer a short term certificate in Injection Molding
Technology within the program of Machine Shop Technology on the Shoals
campus beginning with the 2013 fall semester.
The Injection Molding Technology certificate will include 27 credit hours of
course work which can be finished in a three semesters (including co-op
requirements). The program will provide hands-on training and prepare
students with basic knowledge and skills in Injection mold setting,
processing, 3D modeling, Hydraulics and Pneumatics, Robotic Programming,
Programmable Logic Controllers, etc.
According to NW-SCC President, Dr. Humphrey Lee, the certificate option will
provide existing, new and prospective industry with trained students who
have a strong desire to work in the Plastic Injection Molding field. “We
have had several meetings with our industry partners on their current and
future employment needs,” said Lee. “We have put this program together based
on our local industry’s feedback. We are all in this together.”
According to the Shoals Economic Development Authority President, Forrest
Wright, the Shoals area has a tremendous need for a skilled workforce with
Plastic Injection Mold training. “Its great to see Northwest-Shoals taking
the lead by addressing the immediate and future training needs of the
plastics industry,” said Wright. “The growth of companies like CBC, North
American Lighting, Tasus and Tri-Cities Manufacturing are vital in helping
the Shoals area strive toward one if its goals of ranking number one in job
growth in Alabama.”
The short term certificate has been approved by the Alabama Department of
Postsecondary but is pending approval from the Alabama Commission on Higher
Education (ACHE) in September 13, 2013.
Fall semester registration begins July 12th and classes begin August 19th.
