PHIL CAMPBELL – The Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) Music Department has been a staple for rural Northwest Alabama for approximately 40 years. Saturday, April 29th, NW-SCC will hold a Homecoming Celebration for all the alumni of the NW-SCC Music and Fine Arts Department.
NW-SCC Music Department alumni will participate in a banquet at 5:00 p.m. in the Student Center (Building 305) and hold a concert (open and free) for the public at 7:30 p.m. in the Lou B. Bevill Center. Beginning at 2:30 p.m. all alumni choir and band members will check-in and prepare for rehearsal at 3 p.m.
The NW-SCC Music Department began in the mid 1970’s by Eleanor Christiansen. Over the last 40 years the NW-SCC Music Department has changed names from Northwest Alabama State Junior College (established in 1963) to Northwest Alabama Community College (established in 1989) to Northwest-Shoals Community College (established in 1993).
Throughout this time the NW-SCC Music Department:
- Won five state championships in Jazz Ensemble and Show Choir/Chorale
- Produced 17 Broadway Musicals including “Hello Dolly”, “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Music Man”
- Produced the Christmas production, “Legend of Toyland,” for 30 consecutive years
- Employed full-time faculty (in chronological order): Eleanor Christiansen, Lanny McAlister, Jeff McAlister, George Crummie and Bob Head
