Attendees heard from the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) Director of Career and Technical Education, Art Rousseau; NW-SCC President, Dr. Glenda Colagross; and other college representatives.

The Alabama FAME program incorporates an Associate of Applied Science

Dr. Glenda Colagross

Degree (AAS) in Industrial Systems Technology and two years of paid industry experience. Students will be selected by sponsoring companies.

Colagross welcomed the group and stressed the importance the FAME program will have on our local workforce. “The FAME program is not just a trend,” said Colagross. “The FAME program takes motivated career technical students and integrates them directly into our local workforce through our sponsoring companies. This will help the college and our local business and industry partners to work together to produce qualified employees like never before.”
The FAME program is ideal for students who have a high interest in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) field or who have participated in activities such as the Best Robotics Competition. Once enrolled in the program, students will begin working with their sponsoring company during the summer prior to the start of their coursework in the fall. Starting wages are very competitive, and students have the potential for performance-based raises and bonuses throughout the program.
According to Rousseau, the FAME program is heavily influenced by area companies. “FAME is led by business and industry,” stated Rousseau during his presentation. “We want our companies to take ownership of the program.”

Following the FAME kick-off, companies had an opportunity to visit an open house of the new MSSC (Manufacturing Skill Standards Council) Training Center.
The MSSC is an industry-led and federally recognized training, assessment, and certification system focused on the skills and knowledge needed by today’s manufacturing workforce. Through a partnership with the ACCS and MSSC, Alabama students will now have the ability to be certified as a Certified Production Technician (CPT) through the completion of approved coursework and training.
