Nora Mae Burkhalter, age 94, of Winchester, Tennessee, passed away on January 1, 2024, at Lynchburg
Nursing Center. She was born on September 21, 1929, to the late Walter and Artie Bean Bailey of Winchester
Springs. Nora Mae was a member of Elk River Baptist Church of Decherd. Being one of nine children, she grew up having family meals with large groups. This is where she developed her love of cooking with and for many people. You’d never leave hungry when you visited Nora Mae’s. She’d always have something good to eat. She also had no problem asking teenagers to come by and help cut her hard candy on the big kitchen counter. As a mother of young children on their dairy farm, she started sewing baseballs and softballs for Wilson’s in Tullahoma. As the children grew up, Nora Mae started working at Blue Front Drug Store for about 10 years. Her love of sewing continued when she went to work at Fabric Country. From there she worked at Wal-Mart in the fabric department. You might have also seen her as a hostess at Don’s Restaurant or in the ticket booth at
Cowboy’s in Tullahoma. When her seven grandsons started bragging on their marksmanship, Nora Mae had to prove her sharpshooter skills. She needed to show them what it took to hit the bull’s eye at the age of 73. She never was one to sit still. Nora Mae was always doing something with her hands. She loved to sew, crochet, do tatting and a variety of crafts. Crocheting takes two hands and after she broke her right arm in September 2020, she needed something to do. Peggy gave her paints and canvas to try since that was something she’d never pursued. The inspiration for her paintings came from home photos and her favorite things. She will be remembered as a kind, gentle soul who loved to help anyone she could. She was a loving wife,
mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband, Glen S. Burkhalter; Daughter, Deborah Price; Siblings, Libby Killebrew, Harmon Bailey, Erma Kirkes, Wilma Hesketh, Aaron Bailey, Arline Swiner, Dossett Bailey, Lara Lee. She is survived by her children, Glenda Drake, Peggy Heath (Steve) and
