Nora Garrigan, 90, of Jasper passed away peacefully Monday, July 5th in Montgomery, Alabama. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Jasper with burial in Walker Memory Gardens. Rev. Conrad Howell will officiate. Visitation will be at the church at 10:00 a.m., one hour prior to the service.
Nora was born in Cordova, AL, the daughter of Dan and Ellie Barton. She was raised in Cordova and a graduate of Cordova High School, Class of 1949.
Nora became a Christian at the age of 14. She loved people with a consuming desire to serve Jesus, family and others. As a former member of Cordova’s Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and Jasper’s Northside Baptist Church, she served in many roles including Church Pianist and Sunday school teacher. She and her late husband, JT, experienced the joy of their lives serving in singles ministry as they witnessed and were part in many accepting Christ as their Lord and Savior. In her later years, she was a member of Jasper’s First Baptist Church and JoAnn Green’s Loving and Caring Sunday school class. When in Montgomery, she attended Frazer United Methodist Church and the Living Today class with her Daughter-in-Law.
Nora was first employed by Dr. and Mrs. James Andrew and Dr. R.A. Cummings of Cordova. She went on to serve as Office Manager for Liberty National Life Insurance in Jasper where she retired after 32 years. She also served as a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 65 years and was a former Worthy Matron of the Order.
The love of her life was her late husband, JT Garrigan. They were married for 62 years. For their 50th wedding anniversary they renewed their vows at a celebration hosted by special friends and the singles ministry of Northside Baptist Church. In retirement Nora and JT became avid campers and had many adventures across the southeast. Nora enjoyed music and reading her Bible. Later in life, after JT’s passing, she was comforted by her beloved little dachshund “Spank”. In the last few years, Nora divided her time between Montgomery and Jasper allowing her to spend quality time with her Daughter-in-Law and Grandson and his family.
Nora was preceded in death by her husband, JT Garrigan, her parents Dan and Ellie Barton, her brothers Ausborn and H.A. (Auburn) Barton, her infant daughter Jaye Ellen Garrigan and her son Tommy D. Garrigan. She is survived by her Daughter-in-Law Brinda Garrigan, grandson T.J. (Amy) Garrigan, great granddaughters Sarah Thomas and Selma Kate Garrigan, and a God son William Val Davis II. She will be missed by a host of relatives, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends. Nora wanted to give special thanks to those relatives and friends who stayed in touch through the years and helped her on her “Journey to Heaven.”
Pall bearers will be Doug Kilgore, Shannon Kilgore, Jim Brakefield, Steve Brakefield, David Cain and T.J. Garrigan. Flowers will be accepted or gifts to Jasper’s First Baptist Church Benevolence Fund can be made in Nora’s honor.
